And the true story is basically there - I was working in my office below decks on the Berkeley ferry boat when I smelled something burning. Turned to my left and saw a ton of smoke in our galley. Someone had taken the last cup of coffee and left only a little bit on the bottom without turning the hotplate off or refilling the pot (a chronic abuse of the coffee-culture on that ferry). The remaining coffee had turned to thick, chunky tar. I waited until the next day to clean the pot as I didn't want it to explode with the temperature difference from the cold sink water.
